Will it go away on its own?

"The question I hear most is: 'Will my Morton’s Neuroma go away on its own?' The clinical reality is that it rarely resolves without mechanical intervention. While rest may temporarily reduce inflammation, the underlying fibrous thickening is permanent. Unless you use a device to spread the metatarsal bones and decompress the nerve, the pain will recur as soon as activity resumes."

Understanding Morton's Neuroma

Morton's Neuroma (ICD-10 G57.6) is actually Perineural Fibrosis—a benign thickening of the tissue surrounding the digital nerve that travels between your 3rd and 4th metatarsal bones.

When your arches collapse or your footwear is too narrow, these bones rotate and squeeze together, crushing the nerve. The body responds by building scar tissue to protect the nerve, which ironically makes the nerve thicker and easier to pinch. This creates a chronic cycle of pain that rest alone cannot break.

Mechanical Fact: The Digital Nerve is located on the plantar (bottom) side of the ligament. This is why you feel the pain against the ground, not on top of your foot.

Treatment Comparison Matrix

Option Mechanism Long-Term Result Medical Risk
OTC Foam Soft Cushioning Temporary / Can worsen pinch Low (Ineffective)
Cortisone Shots Anti-inflammatory Relapse likely within 4 weeks Medium (Fat Pad Loss)
Bilt Labs Custom Mechanical Splaying 70.6% Permanent Success Low (Non-Invasive)
Surgery Nerve Excision Permanent numbness High (Stump Neuroma)

The Physics of Decompression

Relief depends entirely on the precise placement of a domed pad just behind the metatarsal heads. Soft foam fails because the bones simply sink into it.

Transverse Arch Lift:

"Our custom orthotics lift the metatarsal shafts, forcing the heads to spread apart. This creates the 'breathing room' required for the nerve to recover permanently."
