Expert Answers & Common Questions

Have questions about your custom insoles?
We're happy to help every step of the way.

Getting Started & Ordering

How much do custom orthotics typically cost?
Traditional custom orthotics prescribed by a podiatrist typically cost between $400 and $800. Store-bought inserts are cheaper ($20-$60) but lack medical correction. Bilt Labs offers medical-grade custom orthotics direct-to-consumer for significantly less, just $249, saving you the doctor's visit markup.
Are custom orthotics really worth it?
Yes. Unlike generic insoles that wear out quickly and only mask symptoms with cushioning, custom orthotics provide long-term structural correction. They treat the root cause of pain, prevent future injuries, and typically last for years, making them a smarter investment for your health.
How long does it take to receive my new custom orthotics?
Once a Premium Build order is placed, we ship out your foot mold impression kit within 1-2 business days. After we receive your kit back at the lab, we will design and build your new custom orthotics and have them shipped out to you within 21 business days.
Do you take insurance or HSA/FSA?

Yes! We are approved and set up to accept FSA and HSA cards directly at checkout. We also automatically provide a detailed invoice that may be used for reimbursement.

However, most insurance companies do not cover custom-made orthotics unless prescribed by a physician seen in person. Due to this, we do not currently bill insurance companies directly.

Why should I choose Bilt Labs?

We bridge the gap between expensive doctor-prescribed orthotics and ineffective store-bought inserts. By going direct-to-lab, you save hundreds while getting the same medical-grade device used by pros.

  • Medical Grade without the Markup: Authentic custom manufacturing for $300-$500 less than a clinic visit.
  • 25+ Years of Expertise: We aren't a tech startup; we are an established lab that has treated thousands of foot conditions.
  • Doctor Overseen: Our protocols are managed by Dr. William Naughton, DPM, Board Certified Podiatrist.
  • True Customization: We use 3D laser scanning to create a mold of your foot—not a "best guess" heat mold.
  • 6-Month Guarantee: We stand behind our work with the industry's best satisfaction policy.
  • Made in the USA: Proudly manufactured in Houston, TX.
How do I order for more than one person?
Each order submitted must be for one person/patient, as the medical file is unique to that individual. If you want to purchase two pairs for two different people, please submit two separate orders.

FSA & HSA Information

Are custom orthotics FSA/HSA eligible?
Yes. Because Bilt Labs orthotics are custom-molded medical devices used to treat specific foot conditions (like plantar fasciitis or flat feet), they are fully eligible for purchase with your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).
How do I checkout with my FSA/HSA card?
It's simple. Select "Credit Card" at checkout and enter your FSA or HSA card information just like a standard Visa or Mastercard. Our system is coded to accept benefits cards directly.
What documentation will I receive for reimbursement?
After your purchase, you will receive a detailed itemized receipt via email. This document contains all the necessary information your benefits administrator requires to verify the medical expense.
What if my FSA/HSA card is declined?
Occasionally, benefit cards may be declined due to strict merchant category codes or daily limits. If this happens, you can simply use your personal credit card to complete the purchase and use the itemized receipt we provide to submit a claim for reimbursement from your plan administrator.

Product Details

What are custom orthotics?
Custom orthotics are specially made foot devices that replace your shoe insoles to support and comfort your feet. Crafted for you and no one else, they are built to match the contours of your feet precisely and are designed for foot pain relief.
What do custom orthotics do for your feet?
They realign your foot to its optimal neutral position, correcting biomechanical faults like overpronation or supination. By stabilizing the foot structure, they reduce strain on ligaments (treating Plantar Fasciitis), improve posture, and distribute pressure evenly to alleviate pain in the feet, ankles, knees, and back.
Are these truly custom, medical-grade orthotics?
Yes! Your orthotics are designed from the exact 3D molds of your feet, tailored for your specific foot health needs. Nothing is pre-made or off-the-shelf. You receive the same medical-grade materials and fabrication process that we provide to podiatrists across the country.
Custom orthotics vs. store-bought insoles?
Store-bought insoles are simply mass-produced "cushions" that fit everyone but fix nothing. They wear out quickly and don't address biomechanics. Bilt Labs custom orthotics are medical devices milled from a 3D mold of YOUR unique foot structure to physically correct misalignment, providing long-term pain relief and stability.
Do these help with Plantar Fasciitis?
Yes. Plantar Fasciitis is our #1 treated condition. By supporting the arch and stabilizing the heel cup, our custom orthotics reduce tension on the plantar fascia ligament, allowing inflammation to heal while preventing re-injury during walking or running.
How are my orthotic insoles made?

We use a combination of 3D laser scanning and CNC robotics to carve your orthotic shell from a solid block of medical-grade polymer, ensuring microscopic precision.

What is the difference between Everyday & Active?

Both builds feature custom arch support, but the top cushioning layer differs:

  • Everyday (Yellow): Memory-foam-like feel. Ideal for walking, standing at work, and daily activities. Focuses on plush comfort and shock absorption.
  • Active (Green): High-rebound, energy-returning foam. Ideal for running, gym, and sports. Focuses on responsiveness, stability, and moisture management.
Do you offer heel lifts or wedges?
Yes. We can incorporate a heel lift or wedge directly into your orthotic (up to 1/2") at no additional cost. This creates a seamless one-piece device for better balance. Simply indicate the size and side needed on your kit questionnaire.

Usage, Fit & Longevity

How do I break in my new orthotics?
Your feet need time to adjust to proper alignment. We recommend wearing them for 1-2 hours the first day, then increasing by 1-2 hours each subsequent day. Most patients are fully adjusted within 5-7 days. Do not wear them for a full day immediately or you may experience soreness.
Will the orthotics fit in my shoes?
Yes. We trim and shape them based on the tracings of your current insoles provided in your kit. This ensures an accurate fit. If they are slightly long, the top cover can easily be trimmed with scissors. *Note: Please remove existing factory insoles before inserting your orthotics.*
How do I clean my orthotics?
Clean them by hand using a damp cloth, mild soap, and lukewarm water. Do not machine wash or use hot water, as high heat can warp the custom shell. Air dry completely before placing back in shoes.
Can I switch them between different shoes?
We recommend getting orthotics for each pair of shoes you wear regularly, as shoe shapes vary. However, if you plan to switch them, we recommend ordering a 3/4 length orthotic, as these transfer between different shoe styles (dress vs sneaker) more easily than full-length ones.
How long do custom orthotics usually last?
The structural shell typically lasts a minimum of 2-3 years, often much longer. The top cover material is a consumable item that will wear out over time depending on activity level. We offer a Refurbish Program to replace top covers when needed without replacing the entire orthotic.

Policies & Returns

What is your return/refund policy?

6-Month Money-Back Guarantee: We provide a full 6 months to try your new custom orthotics. If you are not fully happy, you can return them for a full refund.

We also offer Free Adjustments within that period to ensure the fit is perfect before you decide to return.

Is there a warranty?
Yes. Your orthotics include a Lifetime Warranty on the plastic orthotic shell base against breakage. (This does not include the top cover material, as it wears naturally with use).

Common Podiatry Terms

Confused by medical jargon? Here are the basics.

Pronation The natural inward roll of the foot while walking. Excessive pronation (Overpronation) can lead to arch collapse and pain.
Supination The outward roll of the foot. Excessive supination puts strain on the outer ankle and reduces natural shock absorption.
Plantar Fascia The thick band of tissue running across the bottom of your foot connecting the heel bone to the toes. Inflammation of this tissue is called Plantar Fasciitis.
Heel Cup The curved back portion of an orthotic that cradles the heel, providing stability and concentrating the foot's natural fatty pad for cushioning.
