Are custom orthotics a good treatment for flat feet?
-
Would you say that custom orthotics are an effective solution for relieving pain and issues related to flat feet, compared to other, less expensive options? For me, the cost my doctor is charging is alot and my insurance won't cover it. I just want to make sure they actually work for my issue. Thank You.

Yes — custom orthotics are often the most effective treatment option for flat feet.
Custom orthotics are medical-grade inserts designed to match the exact shape, structure, and biomechanics of your feet. This allows them to provide the specific level of support and correction that flat feet typically require to reduce pain and improve function.
Understanding the Mechanics
Flat feet, also known as pes planus, occur when the arch collapses or fails to form properly during weight-bearing. This causes excessive inward rolling of the foot (overpronation), which alters alignment not only in the feet but also up the kinetic chain — affecting the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back.
Custom orthotics address this problem by providing precise, firm arch support tailored to the individual’s foot structure and gait pattern. By supporting the arch in a corrected position, orthotics help redistribute pressure more evenly across the foot, reduce strain on overstressed ligaments and tendons, and improve overall stability during walking and standing.
Custom vs. Over-the-Counter
While over-the-counter insoles may offer temporary cushioning or mild support, they are manufactured to fit a generic foot shape. As a result, they rarely provide the targeted correction needed for true flat-foot–related pain and often compress or break down quickly, limiting their long-term effectiveness compared to custom devices.
Common signs you may need custom orthotics for flat feet:
- Ongoing arch, heel, ankle, knee, or lower back pain
- Excessive inward rolling of the feet when walking
- Fatigue or discomfort after prolonged standing
- Limited relief from store-bought shoe inserts
- A need for improved comfort and alignment with proper arch support
