How do I keep my feet from burning or tingling at night? Is it Morton's neuroma?
-
Every night when I lie down to sleep, my feet start to burn, tingle, or feel prickly, and it makes falling asleep nearly impossible. I have to hang them off the bed or walk around until they calm down, and I'm losing sleep over it! I haven't gotten a specific diagnosis yet, but from everything I read it sounds like a form of Morton's neuroma, but again it mainly only happens at night when I am trying to go to bed or laying down. I am not diabetic as I read that could be a reason too.

Yes - burning, tingling, or prickling sensations in the feet at night are often nerve-related and should be properly evaluated to identify the underlying cause.
Nighttime foot sensations that interfere with sleep are not normal and commonly point to irritation or compression of nerves. While these symptoms are frequently associated with diabetes, many non-diabetic conditions can produce the same uncomfortable burning or tingling sensations.
Burning, prickling, or crawling sensations in the feet - especially when lying down - often indicate heightened nerve sensitivity. Diabetic neuropathy is a well-known cause, but it is far from the only one. Conditions such as Morton’s neuroma, peripheral nerve compression, lower lumbar spine issues, and even arthritis can trigger similar symptoms, particularly at night when circulation, positioning, and nerve signaling change.
When symptoms worsen while lying down or trying to fall asleep, positional factors may be contributing. Changes in joint alignment, spinal posture, or pressure points can increase nerve irritation in certain positions, leading people to hang their feet off the bed or walk around for temporary relief. Because these symptoms can arise from multiple sources - local, mechanical, or neurological - a proper medical examination is essential to determine the true cause.
Regardless of the diagnosis, improving foot mechanics is often a valuable part of symptom management. Poor alignment and uneven pressure can aggravate already sensitive nerves. Supporting the feet more evenly can help reduce localized compression, improve circulation, and decrease biomechanical strain that may be contributing to nighttime flare-ups.
Custom orthotics are frequently recommended because they stabilize the foot, redistribute pressure, and minimize irritation to vulnerable structures. Devices such as Bilt Labs Custom Orthotics are designed from precise impressions of the feet, allowing support to be tailored to individual anatomy and used alongside other medical treatments as part of a comprehensive care plan.
- Nighttime burning or tingling in the feet is commonly nerve-related
- Diabetes is a cause, but not the only one
- Other possible contributors include:
- Morton’s neuroma
- Nerve compression
- Lower back or spinal issues
- Arthritis or joint changes
- Symptoms that worsen while lying down may involve positional factors
- A medical evaluation is important for accurate diagnosis
- Proper foot support can:
- Reduce nerve irritation and pressure points
- Improve alignment and circulation
- Complement medical treatment plans
- Custom orthotics can be an effective supportive intervention
