Metatarsalgia Orthotics:

Ultimate Metatarsalgia Relief: Our therapeutic, custom orthotics are precision-engineered to reduce painful pressure on the ball of the foot (metatarsal heads). These are not simply generic insoles; each device is custom-made from a precise mold of your foot to ensure specialized forefoot cushioning and a subtle metatarsal dome where necessary, effectively relieving pressure and improving natural gait. All our custom devices come with a Bilt Labs warranty and guarantee.

Precision Pressure Redistribution

The key to treating metatarsalgia is offloading the stressed metatarsal heads. Our design integrates specific features like a custom-height metatarsal pad positioned precisely to lift the painful area and redistribute weight back onto the main arches. This targeted approach, combined with custom arch support and deep heel cradling, significantly reduces forefoot impact and chronic pain, allowing for comfortable walking and standing.

Unparalleled Performance

Built from your unique foot mold and detailed health information, we guarantee a truly precise fit that mass-produced supports cannot match.

Choosing Bilt Labs is choosing an evidence-based therapy engineered for the demands of industrial and work environments. Backed by our lifetime shell warranty.

Understanding The Condition

What is Metatarsalgia?

The Pathomechanics of Forefoot Pressure

Metatarsalgia is a condition marked by pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot (metatarsal heads). It is often caused by an imbalance in how weight is distributed across the foot, leading to excessive pressure on one or more metatarsal bones.

Common causes include thinning of the fat pad, high arches (which force weight onto the forefoot), or shoes with narrow toe boxes. The excessive pressure causes the metatarsal heads to become bruised and inflamed.

Common Symptoms:

  • Burning or aching pain in the ball of the foot.
  • A sensation of having a pebble in your shoe.
  • Sharp, shooting pain or numbness in the toes.
  • Pain that worsens when walking barefoot or on hard surfaces.

Fast Facts

  • Prevalence: Common in runners and those who wear high heels.
  • Risk: High impact sports and aging (fat pad loss) increase risk.
  • Correction: Metatarsal pads redistribute weight away from the bones.

Why Orthotics Are The Primary Treatment

The goal of treatment is to Offload Pressure.

Custom orthotics for Metatarsalgia feature a precision-placed **Metatarsal Pad**. This pad lifts the shafts of the metatarsal bones just behind the ball of the foot. This lifting action creates space and redistributes your body weight away from the inflamed heads, allowing the tissue to heal.

Background

Treating the Root Cause of Pain

The Problem

Forefoot Overload

Generic insoles may offer soft cushioning, but they do not change the mechanics of your foot. They fail to lift the metatarsal bones, leaving the ball of your foot to bear your full weight.

Result: Constant pressure prevents inflammation from subsiding.
The Bilt Solution

Precision Offloading

We integrate a custom metatarsal pad that sits in the "pocket" behind the ball of your foot. This physically lifts the bones and spreads the load evenly across the entire foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Metatarsalgia Relief

Do custom insoles help Metatarsalgia?
Yes. Custom insoles are highly effective for Metatarsalgia because they redistribute weight away from the painful ball of the foot. By incorporating a metatarsal pad, the orthotic lifts the metatarsal bones, reducing pressure on the inflamed heads and allowing the tissue to heal.
What is a metatarsal pad?
A metatarsal pad is a raised area built into the orthotic just behind the ball of the foot. It works by supporting the transverse arch and lifting the metatarsal shafts, which reduces the downward pressure on the metatarsal heads where you feel the pain.
Will this feel like a lump in my shoe?
You will feel the support of the metatarsal pad, but it shouldn't hurt. It may feel like a small pressure behind the ball of your foot at first, which is intentional to offload the painful area. Most people adjust to this feeling within a few days as the pain subsides.

Product & Service

How long does it take to receive my custom orthotics?
Once you place your order, we ship out your foot mold impression kit within 1-2 business days. After we receive your molds back at our lab, we design, build, and ship your custom orthotics within 21 business days.
Are these truly custom, medical-grade orthotics?
Yes. These are not "heat-moldable" or "shelf" insoles. They are custom-fabricated from a physical mold of your foot using the same medical-grade polymers and EVA foams we supply to podiatry clinics. Nothing is pre-made or off-the-shelf.
Do you take insurance or FSA/HSA?
We are approved and set up to accept insurance FSA/HSA cards directly at checkout. We can also send a detailed invoice for reimbursement. However, we do not bill insurance companies directly as that typically requires an in-person office visit.
How long will my custom orthotics last?
Bilt Labs custom orthotics typically last a minimum of 2-3 years. The orthotic shell itself often lasts longer (and has a lifetime warranty against breaking), but the top covers may show wear and can be refurbished.
What is your return/refund policy?
We offer a full 6-month trial period. If you are not fully happy with your orthotics by that time, you can return them for a full refund. We also offer 2 free adjustments during this period to ensure the fit is perfect.
Where are my orthotics made?
Your new custom orthotics are made in the United States. We are located in the Houston, Texas area. All fabrications, designs, and finishing are performed by experts right here in our Houston lab.
What is your warranty/guarantee policy?
Your orthotics include a Lifetime Warranty on the plastic orthotic shell against breaking or cracking. This does not include the top cover material, as that is a consumable item that naturally wears with use.
